Objective of the consultative workshop:

  • To have better understanding of the principles underlying access to justice, the CEDAW as international human rights and legal instrument, the situation with the rural women as well as the Lao PDR legal context and situation in this area;
  • To become more familiar with the UN CEDAW Concluding observations regarding access to justice in Lao PDR;
  • To discuss the possibility of developing a National Strategy on Access to Justice for all (including women);
  • To discuss the challenges that women in rural areas face in accessing justice and to exchange information on formal and informal justice mechanisms available to them in those areas;

Expected Output:

  • Identify the main issues in the coming months for drafting a strategic, clear and coherent Road Map as to the way forward and as to the direction to be taken by all stakeholders involved in the delivery of justice in order to make justice more accessible for all, and for women in particular.

  • Representatives from the National Assembly, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Labor and Social Work, Ministry of Public Security, Supreme Court, Prosecutor’s Office, UNDP, UNFPA, UNDOC, Asia Foundation, Care International, GDA, ADWLE (approximately 34 participants)
