Event description

With the support of the Government of Canada through the Departments of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) – the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRCT), the International Women's Rights Action Watch ASia Pacific (IWRAW Asia Pacific) and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment for Women (UN Women) is organising a national capacity building workshop for individuals in the Commission on the use of CEDAW and international frameworks, such as the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights to promote women's human rights within the context business. This workshop aims to deepen understanding of CEDAW concepts and standards and introduce key international tools that relate to business and human rights to strenthen the Commission's capacity to develop initiatives and proposals for reform that are grounded in CEDAW standards to protect women's human rights in the business context. The emphasis of the programme is to examine the role of the Commission in advancing de facto equality for women, in line with CEDAW.

Workshop Objectives:

  • To deepen the understanding of key CEDAW concepts and how they related to business and women's human rights;
  • To strenthen the understanding of international standards and tool on business and human rights, such as the UN Guiding Principle on Business and Human Rights and the relevance of such standards for the promotion of gender equality in Thailand;
  • To study the role of National Human Rights Commission (NHRI) in advancing de facto equality for women.

Expected Results:

  • Hightened familiarity with CEDAW standards; - Enhanced awareness of international standards relating to business and human rights;
  • Greater understanding of ways in which the mandate of an NHRI mandates can be used to ensure the realization of women's human rights at the domestic level
  • Improved protection of women's human rights by the National Human Rights Commission thorugh improved monitoring of CEDAW Concluding Observations, legal and policy advocacy initiatives, investigations and public education programmes.
