In 2013, the UN joint programme Partners for Prevention (P4P) launched a ground-breaking study that interviewed more than 10,000 men in six countries in Asia and the Pacific about their use and experiences of violence: “Why do some men use violence against women and how can we prevent it”. This unprecedented study provides unique insights around the deep-rooted patriarchal values and men’s sense of entitlement and control over women and their bodies that lie at the heart of violence against women (VAW). It found that the average age of VAW perpetration was earlier than previously thought, with half of men who admitted to perpetrating rape having done so for the first time as teenagers.
