Phnom Penh, Cambodia — The #WhyStop Short Film competition was a CARE Cambodia initiative to encourage young Cambodians – particularly young men – to explain to their peers why sexual harassment must stop. It was promoted to schools, universities and youth groups around the country via a robust social media strategy and a travelling Roadshow. Over 1,000 young people were involved in making the 50 original films entered, before 16 finalists were selected – including one in an indigenous language – which were judged then screened at the awards on 25 November International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Some three-hundred-and-fifty guests attended the red-carpet awards presentation event. Invited guests included the filmmakers, their families and friends as well as other honorary invitees that included Ministry officials, Members of Parliament, and the Minister of Women’s Affairs. The event marked the first day of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence here. Representing UN Women in Cambodia and the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women and Girls, Janet Wong presented one of the trophies to the awardees.
Three winners were announced on the night, and voting for the Audience Choice award has now commenced on our Facebook page. The winner of this award will be announced on International Human Rights Day, December 10. As #WhyStop currently has almost 51,000 Facebook fans, it has been a hotly-contested award!
The #WhyStop Short Film Competition was funded by the UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women, with support from the Australian Government. #WhyStop was also sponsored locally by Sony, Sabay News, Major Cineplex and Cellcard. The short films will be used as a peer education tool in schools and social media. The public is encouraged to share the films – the winners or any of the finalists or even our trailer – on their social media pages. They are all hosted on our YouTube channel via the CARE Cambodia website.
