Empowered Women, Peaceful Communities

A landmark community festival to be held on 8th October 2017 in Sumenep and scheduled to be attended by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. Joko Widodo, to commemorate the International Day of Peace, will bring together 8,000 people to celebrate women’s empowerment and peaceful communities.

The gathering under the theme “Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All”, will bring together religious leaders, santri and santriwati, and women's economic groups to take part in a range of dynamic events including cultural performances, a collective peace oath, a bazaar hosted by women’s entrepreneurs, and a panel discussion on how Madura women contribute to peace.

UN Women works to promote peaceful coexistence and resilient communities through women’s empowerment. The Wahid Foundation advances the development of a tolerant and multicultural society and expands the values of peace and non-violence in Indonesia and throughout the world. UN Women is currently partnering with Wahid Foundation the “Empowered Women, Peaceful Communities” programme, with support from the Government of Japan to promote women’s leadership and economic empowerment to build social cohesion and strengthen resilience at the community level.
