The Family Health and Safety Survey (FHSS) was conducted in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville in 2012–2013 to better understand issues affecting family health, gender-based violence, and community safety. The study aimed to inform evidence-based interventions to promote healthier, more peaceful communities in Bougainville. Using internationally recognized random sampling techniques, the survey included interviews with 864 men and 879 women aged 18–49, conducted in Pidgin by trained fieldworkers of the same sex as respondents. To ensure confidentiality, especially for sensitive topics, participants completed some sections of the survey privately using handheld digital devices. The survey followed rigorous ethical and safety standards and used a standardized questionnaire aligned with other global studies. This publication was produced under the UN Joint Programme Partners for Prevention (2008–2017) implemented by UNDP, UNFPA, UN Women, and UNV, with support from Australia.
