Policy Brief: Shaping Our Future Developing Healthy and Happy Relationships Primary Prevention Intervention with Young Adolescents and Caregivers in Kampong Cham, Cambodia

This policy brief presents the outcomes of Shaping Our Future: Developing Healthy and Happy Relationships, a primary prevention intervention implemented in Kampong Cham, Cambodia. Targeting adolescents aged 12–14 and their caregivers, the initiative aimed to promote gender-equitable attitudes, build healthy relationship skills, and reduce acceptance of violence. Through participatory sessions, community engagement, and volunteerism, the programme supported improved communication, positive parenting, and awareness of support services. Endline findings demonstrated significant shifts in attitudes and behaviours among both adolescents and caregivers, including reduced acceptance of violence, improved family relationships, and increased community engagement. The intervention is aligned with Cambodia’s National Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against Women (NAPVAW II) and offers a promising model for scale-up and integration into broader education, parenting, and gender equality programmes. This publication was produced under the UN Joint Programme Partners for Prevention (2008–2017) implemented by UNDP, UNFPA, UN Women, and UNV, with support from Australia.
