Gender Analysis: 2025 Myanmar Earthquake
This report presents the findings of a comprehensive Gender Analysis conducted after the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on 28 March 2025. Led by the Myanmar GiHA Working Group, the analysis draws on 2,136 household surveys and 298 site observations carried out in affected areas between April and May 2025.
The study documents the gendered impacts of the disaster on women, girls, men, boys, persons with disabilities, older persons, and LGBTIQ+ individuals. It highlights disproportionate risks of gender-based violence, barriers to accessing food, shelter, health and WASH services, and the exclusion of marginalized groups from decision-making and aid distribution.
Key recommendations include:
- Expanding safe shelters and WASH facilities with adequate privacy and accessibility.
- Scaling up mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), especially for survivors of violence and vulnerable groups.
- Prioritizing livelihood recovery tailored to the needs of women and marginalized households.
- Supporting the leadership and participation of local women-led organizations in humanitarian coordination and response.
The report provides evidence-based insights to guide inclusive, gender-responsive humanitarian action and ensure recovery efforts uphold dignity, rights, and safety for all.
