Femicides in 2024: Global estimates of intimate partner/family member femicides

Nearly 50,000 women and girls were killed in 2024 by an intimate partner or other family member, according to new estimates by UN Women and UNODC. This means that 60 percent of all intentional killings of women and girls last year occurred in the home — the place where they should be safest.

Africa recorded the highest number of victims in 2024 (22,600), followed by Asia (17,400), the Americas (7,700), Europe (2,100), and Oceania (300). When adjusted for population size, Africa also had the highest regional rate, at 3 victims per 100,000 women and girls.

While some regions have made progress in reducing these killings over time, the global level remains persistently high. Data gaps, especially outside Europe and the Americas, continue to limit full understanding of the scale of femicide beyond the private sphere.

This publication provides the latest global and regional estimates and highlights the urgent need to strengthen prevention, improve data systems, and ensure that every killing is counted.
