Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls (GEWE) are essential to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the Sustainable Development Goals, and to meeting the commitments set out in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. In Bangladesh, gender equality is also a priority in the Government’s Eighth Five-Year Plan 2020–2026 (8FYP). The Plan recognizes that advancing GEWE helps remove obstacles to economic growth, reduce poverty, and strengthen social development. It therefore sets out actions to expand women’s skills, resources, and opportunities, while also tackling discriminatory laws and practices, weak institutions, and harmful social norms.

This factsheet—together with eight divisional factsheets prepared by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs (MoWCA) and the Local Consultative Group on Women’s Advancement and Gender Equality (LCG WAGE)—presents data showing how women and men are affected differently across Bangladesh. It summarizes key findings to support action on the GEWE agenda.
