Casebook on Real-World Impact of AI in Gender Empowerment
The Casebook on the Real-World Impact of AI for Gender Empowerment explores how artificial intelligence (AI) can be leveraged to advance gender equality and build more inclusive socio-economic systems. Despite global progress, structural barriers continue to limit women’s access to opportunities, resources, and decision-making spaces, underscoring the need for targeted and scalable solutions.
Developed by the IndiaAI Mission under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), in partnership with UN Women and with support from the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, the casebook showcases 23 impactful AI-driven solutions addressing challenges across women’s health, safety, financial inclusion, and livelihoods. Featuring examples from the Global South, it demonstrates how AI can be designed and deployed to address context-specific gender gaps while delivering measurable outcomes.
The casebook also recognizes the dual nature of AI in gender contexts. While AI has the potential to accelerate inclusion and empowerment, it can also perpetuate or amplify existing biases if not developed and deployed responsibly. Accordingly, the publication highlights the importance of ethical AI development, inclusive data practices, and gender-responsive design frameworks.
By documenting real-world applications that are both scalable and socially grounded, the casebook provides a practical resource for policymakers, practitioners, and ecosystem leaders seeking to place gender inclusion at the heart of technological innovation.
Together, these efforts reaffirm that AI, when developed and deployed responsibly, ethically, and inclusively, can serve as a powerful tool for narrowing gender gaps, expanding opportunities, and advancing more equitable societies.
