The UN Women Nepal Country Office undertook a national study to better understand the enabling and obstructive factors of women’s political participation as elected officials. This study examines the violence locally elected women representatives in Nepal face when holding public office at the local level. It focuses exclusively on women’s time in office and does not cover campaign or election periods. This is the first study on VAWP in Nepal. It is part of the UN Women’s global initiative to develop harmonised survey tools on VAWP.

The purpose is not to determine the impact of PFM in closing gender gaps but to study the extent to which the gender and social inclusion perspective is mainstreamed in the relevant PFM institutions, processes and systems. The study on the Operational Modality of Various Funds within Federal Governance assesses the status of 12 funds with mandates to respond to GBV and advance GE in Nepal. Funds related to GBV and GE are a central component of the GoN’s effort to advance women’s human rights and equality under law. The study reveals a serious gap between the rights and entitlements that are formally guaranteed to women under law in Nepal, and their ability to experience benefits from these funds.

The Gender Equality in Numbers report consolidates available data on key gender-related Sustainable Development Goal indicators and the minimum set of gender-related indicators for Nepal. It provides an overview of commitments to gender equality and women’s empowerment and key statistics in population demographics, health, education, leadership, labour and economic empowerment, poverty reduction and ending all forms of gender based violence.

The Government of Nepal has demonstrated through progressive policy measures a strong commitment to advance Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) issues and has centre staged GESI principles in public policies and budget processes. The checklist, ‘Diversity in Dialogue’ includes detailed steps to help organizers and panelists to ensure multiple arguments, expertise and inclusion in public forums. Nepal has achieved significant progress in addressing these issues, supported by positive national and international commitments.
