The note is intended to support universities and university administrators, UN staff working with universities in this area, civil society partners, students and other relevant stakeholders—particularly in middle- and low-income countries where there are few resources for addressing violence against women. Universities should adopt targeted measures to address the needs of specific groups, including those most vulnerable and at risk (e.g. students with disabilities, migrants, and those from ethnic minorities, lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) individuals).

Achieving an Equal Future 2021 : International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated globally on 8 March every year. In 2021, with the theme of “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world,” IWD celebrates the tremendous efforts by women and girls across the globe and in Timor-Leste in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

These Action Cards provide practical actions for frontline service providers to consider and apply when they support women migrant workers who are at risk of, or subjected to violence. These 10 things in the Action Cards are based on the international principles and standards including the Essential Services Package for Women and Girls Subject to Violence with specific consideration of the needs of women migrant workers.

Women and girls face even more violence in times of humanitarian crises, such as this moment with COVID- 19 and past outbreaks when movement is restricted. Violence against women has been called a “shadow pandemic” because it has huge consequences on the health and well-being of women and girls, but they often suffer in the shadows which has socio-economic costs that will last beyond the pandemic.

Following years of advocacy by women’s organizations and civil society in Timor-Leste, there is greater attention from government institutions and the general public to the issue of sexual harassment. As part of UN Women’s partnership with the Civil Service Commission to address sexual harassment in the Public Administration, this poster was developed in collaboration with the JU’S, and illustrates various forms of sexual harassment behaviours.

“Safe and Fair: Realizing women migrant workers’ rights and opportunities in the ASEAN region (2018-2022) ” is part of the multi-year EU-UN Spotlight Initiative to Eliminate Violence against Women and Girls. Women make up almost half of migrants in the ASEAN region. They are largely concentrated in informal, low paid labour including in agriculture, manufacturing, domestic work, construction and entertainment. Irregular migrants and migrant domestic workers are at particular risk of violence, forced labour and trafficking due to their status and isolation. The Sustainable Development Goals 5 (Gender Equality), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), 10 (Reduced Inequality) and 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutes) aim to address problems facing women migrant workers.
