This is the second report issued that synthesizes the priorities and recommendations of Afghan women from consultations undertaken by UN Women, UNAMA and IOM. The aim of the consultations is to bring in the voices of a diverse cross-section of Afghan women on policy and programming challenges facing Afghanistan, to ensure that their perspectives inform decision-making.

Through this programme, UN Women contributed to the implementation of the Secretary General’s Plan of Action on Preventing Violent Extremism and to the achievement of the Agenda 2030 goals, particularly SDG 16 on promoting peaceful and inclusive societies, and Goal 5 on promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The UN Women Nepal Country Office undertook a national study to better understand the enabling and obstructive factors of women’s political participation as elected officials. This study examines the violence locally elected women representatives in Nepal face when holding public office at the local level. It focuses exclusively on women’s time in office and does not cover campaign or election periods. This is the first study on VAWP in Nepal. It is part of the UN Women’s global initiative to develop harmonised survey tools on VAWP.

The complex and protracted humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan affects persons of all genders, at-risk and marginalized groups differently. Women and girls are disproportionately affected because of gender-specific restrictions that directly impact their ability to realize their rights. Traditional gender norms and patriarchal cultures have long reinforced discrimination against women and girls in Afghanistan, increasing their vulnerability and decreasing their capacity to recover from shocks, leaving them disproportionately affected during crises.

The journey of women migrant workers begins in the village. Most of them come from the village, and it is an entry and exit point wherein information on overseas employment opportunities and requirements can be obtained. UN Women, in partnership with Kalyanamitra initiated "Strengthening the Capacity of village and Migrant Communities to Prevent and Respond to Violence against Women Migrant Workers and Trafficking" project in 2020-2022. The story of change from the villages is captured in this book to inspire everyone, including small village communities, that they can play their part in ending gender-based violence and trafficking.

UN Women Indonesia rolled out the project from June 2020 through May 2021. At the end of the project, 610 women benefited from the cash-based interventions, 100 women received advocacy and leadership training, and more than 100 individuals received knowledge on coordinated quality services to better support and empower women's migrant workers. In addition, 11 women’s crisis centers and shelters across the country were supported to ensure that services for women’s survivors of violence could continue during the pandemic.

After the first five years of the implementation of the ASEAN Regional Plan of Action on the Elimination of Violence against Women, this mid-term review was conducted to take stock of the progress of the implementation of the plan so far, highlighting advances among ASEAN Member States to strengthen the prevention of and response to violence against women in the region. [Infographics] Women who migrate for work contribute greatly to stronger societies and economies in both their countries of origin and their countries of destination. For many, the decision to work abroad involves prioritizing their families’ welfare over their own personal comfort and desires. Women generally have fewer options than men for regular migration, and are often employed in lower paid, informal sectors with few, if any, labour protections.

These statistics set the tone for a series of conversations jointly hosted by UN Women and the French Embassy in Sri Lanka, in the broader context of COVID-19 and the parallel worsening of gender equality. In the course of the six discussions – each based on the thematic focus areas of the Generation Equality Forum – experts and activists repeatedly highlighted three underlying problems in relation to gender equality and women’s rights in Sri Lanka.

The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown combined with Cyclone Amphan and the severe monsoon flooding of 2020 destroyed the livelihoods of thousands of families and individuals. Many were forced to live in terrible conditions without food, income, and shelter. In response, UN Women launched a cash assistance project delivering cash grant support and COVID-19 prevention awareness campaigns to Bangladesh’s most vulnerable households.

In 2020, Bangladesh faced a double disaster Cyclone and COVID-19 in Khulna and Satkhira districts amongst the hardest hit. Thousands of families lost their livelihoods and incomes overnight. While the government provided direct assistance to those affected, many women and girls fell through the cracks. At the onset of the pandemic, UN Women expanded the group of NGOs that it worked with and created the Gender Monitoring Network (GMN), a network of 28 civil society organizations (CSOs) and women’s rights organizations. Organizations from the GMN supported UN Women in identifying vulnerable groups of women and girls, including transgender and sex workers, for unconditional cash assistance.

[End Term Project Evaluation Report] The project “Economic Empowerment of Women Home Based Workers (HBWs) and Excluded Groups in Pakistan” had a three-year duration (April 2017-June 2020). The project is also referred as ‘the third phase of WEE Programme’ conceived jointly with Government of Norway’s support and funding through a shared strategic interest in promotion and protection of WHBWs.

The aim of this rapid appraisal in reviewing the Climate Change Gender Action Plan (CcGAP) 2013 in Bangladesh is to review the progress of CcGAP implementation and to identify barriers and opportunities to forward the gender and climate change agenda that will be considered in updating the CcGAP in upcoming days.
