Royal Thai Government, UN sign joint five year action plan to build resilience creativity and equity in Thailand

6 June 2012 - The United Nations and the Royal Thai Government sealed their commitment to work together to achieve the goals set out in the 11th National Economic and Social Development Plan today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Following the endorsement of the UN Partnership Framework (UNPAF) last year, today an “action plan” has been signed, which translates the strategic direction provided by the UNPAF into concrete action. The plan focuses on six main issues for joint partnerships, including social protection, human rights and access to justice, climate change, creative economy, strategic information and international cooperation.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, senior government representatives as co-chairs of the six joint partnerships, and members of the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in Thailand signed the UNPAF Action Plan. UN Women is part of the UNCT and co-signatory.

Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, delivered the welcoming remarks on behalf of the Royal Thai Government, noting that the UNPAF reinforced the strong partnership between the Royal Thai Government and the UN Country Team.

“Today’s ceremony is a culmination of our common efforts, started a few years ago, to ensure the highest quality policy advance as well as other support from the UN to Thailand, following our emergence as a Middle-Income Country.”

Mr Sihasak also underlined that the plan will serve as a useful planning and monitoring tool to translate our words into action.

The UNPAF Action Plan signed today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not ‘business as usual.

“It focuses strategically in a few areas where the UN can bring added value to the collaboration largely through its technical expertise and linkages to international networks” said Dr. Maureen Birmingham, Acting UN Resident Coordinator, speaking on behalf of the United Nations Country Team.
