Madhura Dasgupta Sinha has more than 25 years of banking and leadership experience, and is now the CEO and Founder of Aspire For Her, which motivates young women to enter and stay in the workforce. According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2021, with only 22.3 per cent of Indian women in the labour force and less women in leadership roles, India’s gender pay gap has increased this year. From cooking and cleaning to taking care of children and the elderly, household care work is the backbone of thriving families, communities and economies. Yet many cultures traditionally have regarded men as the breadwinners and women as the caregivers, with unpaid care work their “natural responsibility”. With more than 10 million people, Ho Chi Minh City is the country’s largest city. But it has only around 200 public toilets, and many of them are risky places for women and children. “I always have a fear of using public toilets due to the bad hygiene condition, lack of clean water, toilet paper and soap,” said Ngoc Nguyen, 35. “The restrooms for women are often small and lack bidet sprayers. I face many difficulties when I go with my sons.”
