When ventilators were becoming scarce due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Somaya Faruqi, 17, led Afghanistan’s Girl’s Robotics Team as they developed a prototype ventilator to support their country’s health care system.

With more than 10 million people, Ho Chi Minh City is the country’s largest city. But it has only around 200 public toilets, and many of them are risky places for women and children. “I always have a fear of using public toilets due to the bad hygiene condition, lack of clean water, toilet paper and soap,” said Ngoc Nguyen, 35. “The restrooms for women are often small and lack bidet sprayers. I face many difficulties when I go with my sons.”

Every morning at 10 a.m., Sok Sopheap sets off to run errands and pick up her two grandchildren from school in Tropang Thom village, southern Cambodia. Sopheap is in her 50’s – a stage in life when many women in her country might slow down – but like many local women, she is bearing an increasingly heavy burden as a result of climate change. Manual scavengers represent arguably one of the most inhumane ‘jobs’ that a person can have. Ms. Chotti Bai from Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan used to be one of the hundreds of thousands of manual scavengers in India. Their daily task it is to remove human waste from unsanitary and ‘dry toilets’ (without flushing system).
