Vietnamese diplomats learned new skills to boost the rights of women migrant workers

[Press release] Today, more than 100 Vietnamese diplomats have gathered in Ha Noi to acquire new skills on how they can better support women migrant workers subject to violence and trafficking, prior to their overseas assignments. The training workshop is jointly organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UN Women as part of the programme, “Safe and Fair” within the framework of the global EU-UN Spotlight Initiative to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.

Sufia Khatun from Pirganj, Rongpur, found herself without any source of income after her husband passed away. Through a joint UN programme, she was able to learn tailoring and get access to finance to invest in her own business. Today she employs 20 women in her community.

Shanta Lakshmi Shrestha chairs the Beyond Beijing Committee (BBC), a coalition of women's rights and gender-justice organizations working to advance the status of women in Nepal. It was created after the Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing in 1995. The Committee advocates and monitors the Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA) from the grassroots to the global level.

Government of Japan pledges USD 2 million to implement the Women, Peace and Security agenda in Sri Lanka

The Government of Japan has committed USD 2 million to UN Women Sri Lanka to carry out the second phase of the ongoing programme titled “Implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda in Sri Lanka”. This project is to be carried out with the integral support of the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs and will focus on women’s participation and empowerment in efforts to prevent and resolve conflicts.

Women’s equal access to E-commerce is not only a door of opportunity for women’s economic empowerment, but also research has shown that money in the hands of women is spent on health, education—the family—benefiting the community and economy. It gives women flexibility and enhances their decision-making power in homes. Digital financial solutions also have dramatic impacts on women’s economic and social well-being, especially when women are subject to various mobility restrictions due to gender discriminatory social norms. E-commerce is an accelerator for the achievement of the SDGs as highlighted by previous speakers.

Tie Lingmei 40, lives with her family in Qiaotou Village of Qinghai Province in China. With her ambition and the help of UN Women, she improved living conditions for herself as well as for many other women in her village. “I used to work as a taxi driver along with my husband in the county. Because I could not leave my child alone in my hometown, I decided to sell the car, came back and set up an agricultural cooperative with the help of our village secretary.

UN Women-led training boosts gender communications across agencies in Nepal

A cross-agency training on gender in communications brought together UN staff from 13 agencies in Nepal last month. The two-day session provided the 25 participants with a range of tools and skills to develop gender-responsive communication materials in their respective lines of work. “There is a need for devising coherent communications plans and strategies that position the United Nations as the torchbearer of incorporating gender in communications,” said Valerie Julliand, UN Resident Coordinator.
