In Focus: World Environment Day 2025
Date:

The United Nations General Assembly designated 5 June as World Environment Day in 1972, coinciding with the opening day of the historic Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), World Environment Day has grown into the largest international platform for environmental awareness and action, uniting millions of people, communities, and organizations around the globe to spotlight urgent challenges and drive transformative change.
With the theme of “Beat Plastic Pollution”, this year highlights one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time. Plastic waste is polluting our ecosystems, contaminating food systems and intensifying climate risks. In Asia and the Pacific, where vulnerability to environmental degradation is especially high, women and girls are among the most affected. Yet, they are also powerful agents of change. From coastal communities to climate-vulnerable islands, women are redesigning the way we produce, consume, and conserve. They are leading local recycling efforts, building circular economies, and proving that sustainability and equality go hand in hand.
On World Environment Day 2025, UN Women reaffirms its commitment to gender equality as a cornerstone of environmental sustainability. A more just, inclusive, and sustainable future is only possible when women and girls are empowered to lead environmental action and decision-making at every level.
