UN Women and LinkedIn launch Link Women initiative to deliver targeted digital skills training program for Indonesian women

Jakarta, Indonesia — UN Women and LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional network, in collaboration with Markoding, kicked off the official launch of the Link Women initiative in Indonesia with an online launch event and talk show “A Guide to Thriving as Women in the Career World”. Link Women is a new joint initiative by LinkedIn and UN Women, launched in celebration of this year’s Kartini Day, to help expand women’s economic opportunities by supporting their digital upskilling and providing greater access to jobs. This initiative is a part of a regional partnership between LinkedIn and UN Women, following the success of its pilot program in India.

“To equip women with digital and in-demand skills to succeed in the future work and support young women to transition from education and training to decent work is a one step forward towards reducing gender gaps in labour force participation,” said Ulziisuren Jamsran, UN Women Indonesia Representative and Liaison to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). “We recognize strong commitment from the private sector to invest in women’s economic empowerment and address upskilling challenges. Combined with our efforts to promote positive social norms, it can provide a key pathway for the equal and full participation of women in the workforce.”

The Link Women initiative will equip 2,000 women and more who are university students, job seekers and career returners with new digital, job-ready skills while raising awareness about gender equality in the workplace. This comprehensive approach empowers women with both the in-demand skills employers seek and the knowledge to recognize and navigate gender biases they may encounter, ultimately enhancing their ability to access and thrive in quality employment opportunities. Link Women’s journey will start with campus roadshows in West Java, Banten and Jakarta in May 2025 to better understand the learning needs and interests of female university students and to strengthen community outreach efforts.

Despite progress, women in Indonesia continue to face barriers in the world of work. For 20 years, the gender gap in labour force participation has remained stagnant. In addition, according to Statistics Indonesia, 64 per cent of women’s employment is in the informal sector. Persistent challenges – such as unequal access to skills development, gender bias and the disproportionate burden of unpaid care work – continue to limit women’s ability to enter and thrive in the workforce. These disparities are especially pronounced in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, where women remain significantly underrepresented.

Highlighting challenges faced by women who want to pursue education and careers in STEM, Dr. Sastia Prama Putri, Associate Professor at the University of Osaka and Metabolomics Expert, said, “First, at home, women are told to limit themselves, and they are not supported to pursue their dreams, and this leads to demotivation. Second, systemic challenge. When women have graduated (from the STEM field) and entered the workforce, they are facing gender bias.”

“When women are entering the career world, women are still forced to choose between career or family, which is an either/or option. They are told it is impossible to have both. We see very few role models who can do both,” added Dr. Sastia.

In addition to that, during the talkshow, Xaviera Putri, UN Indonesia Champion for Women and Girls in Science, Writer, and Influencer, said, “The challenge (of women to thrive in the workforce) is not only the lack of a support system but also systemic issues, and we have to address the root cause. It goes beyond focusing solely on women. Link Women is a great initiative; not only does it equip women with the necessary skills and knowledge, but it also prepares them for the challenges they may face in real life."

Moving forward, Link Women will offer basic, free online courses available at markoding.org/linkwomen. These include specialized modules on gender awareness – covering fundamental gender concepts and strategies to address workplace bias – alongside courses on soft skills, career readiness, introduction to digital marketing, and AI awareness and readiness. The top 200 participants of the online course will gain the opportunity to join an intensive online bootcamp in September 2025, where learners will be able to choose their learning pathway on digital skills and engage with their cohort in synchronous sessions. At the end of the programme, Link Women will also provide exclusive mentorship opportunities from industry leaders for selected participants, so they can gain access to professional networks and connect with companies.

Registration is now open to join Link Women programme at markoding.org/linkwomen to access upcoming training and receive updates on online bootcamp and mentorship opportunities. Registration will be open from 15 May until 30 June 2025.

Jakarta, Indonesia — UN Women dan LinkedIn, jaringan profesional terbesar di dunia, bersama dengan Markoding, hari ini meluncurkan inisiatif Link Women di Indonesia melalui acara daring bertajuk “A Guide To Thriving as Women in The Career World” (Panduan bagi Perempuan untuk Sukses di Dunia Karier). Kolaborasi terbaru LinkedIn dan UN Women yang telah diperkenalkan pada momen Hari Kartini, bertujuan memperluas peluang ekonomi bagi perempuan dengan meningkatkan keterampilan digital dan memberikan mereka akses lebih luas terhadap peluang kerja. Inisiatif ini merupakan bagian dari kemitraan regional LinkedIn dan UN Women, yang sebelumnya sukses dilaksanakan di India.

“Membekali perempuan dengan keterampilan digital dan keterampilan yang dibutuhkan di dunia kerja masa depan, serta mendukung transisi perempuan muda dari pendidikan dan pelatihan ke pekerjaan layak, adalah langkah penting untuk mengurangi kesenjangan gender dalam partisipasi angkatan kerja,” ujar Ulziisuren Jamsran, Perwakilan UN Women untuk Indonesia dan Liaison ASEAN. “Kami mengapresiasi komitmen sektor swasta dalam berinvestasi pada pemberdayaan ekonomi perempuan dan peningkatan keterampilan. Dikombinasikan dengan upaya kami mendorong norma sosial yang positif, langkah ini dapat menjadi kunci untuk mewujudkan partisipasi perempuan secara penuh dan setara di dunia kerja,” lanjutnya.

Inisiatif Link Women akan membekali lebih dari 2.000 perempuan, termasuk mahasiswi, pencari kerja, dan perempuan yang kembali bekerja, dengan keterampilan digital terbaru yang siap pakai. Program ini juga meningkatkan kesadaran tentang kesetaraan gender di tempat kerja, memberdayakan perempuan untuk mengenali dan menghadapi bias gender yang mungkin mereka temui, serta membuka akses ke peluang kerja yang berkualitas. Perjalanan Link Women dimulai dengan roadshow kampus di Jawa Barat, Banten, dan Jakarta pada Mei 2025, guna memahami kebutuhan belajar mahasiswi sekaligus memperkuat pemberdayaan komunitas.

Terlepas dari kemajuan yang telah dicapai, perempuan di Indonesia masih menghadapi berbagai hambatan di dunia kerja. Selama 20 tahun terakhir, kesenjangan gender dalam partisipasi angkatan kerja belum banyak berubah. Data Badan Pusat Statistik menunjukkan bahwa 64 persen perempuan bekerja di sektor informal. Tantangan seperti akses terbatas ke pengembangan keterampilan, bias gender, dan beban kerja perawatan tak berbayar yang tidak proporsional terus menghambat perempuan untuk masuk dan berkembang di dunia kerja. Kesenjangan ini semakin jelas terlihat di bidang sains, teknologi, teknik, dan matematika (STEM), di mana representasi perempuan masih sangat rendah.

Menggarisbawahi tantangan yang dihadapi oleh perempuan yang ingin menempuh pendidikan dan berkarir di bidang STEM, Dr. Sastia Prama Putri, Associate Professor di Universitas Osaka dan Ahli Metabolomik, mengatakan, “Pertama, dari rumah. Di rumah, perempuan sudah terprogram untuk melimitasi diri sendiri, tidak didukung mimpinya, dan pada akhirnya demotivasi. Kedua, kegagalan sistemik ketika perempuan sudah lulus dan bekerja, bias gender itu lebih terasa.”

“Ketika perempuan berkarir, seakan-akan kita itu hanya diberikan opsi, antara mau dan sukses berkarir, atau berkeluarga dan sukses berkeluarga. Kita harus memilih salah satu. Kalau dua-duanya itu tidak mungkin. Dan role model yang melakukan keduanya itu semakin sedikit lagi,” tambah Dr. Sastia.

Sementara itu, dalam sesi bincang-bincang terkait tantangan perempuan di dunia karir, Xaviera Putri, UN Indonesia Champion for Women and Girls in Science, penulis dan influencer menambahkan, “Permasalahannya bukan hanya dari sisi tidak adanya support system (lingkungan yang mendukung), tetapi juga masalah sistematik yang harus diatasi dari akarnya dan tidak bisa hanya diatasi oleh diri perempuan itu sendiri. Link women adalah sebuah inisiatif yang sangat baik, karena bukan hanya membekali perempuan dengan skill dan ilmu yang diperlukan tapi juga mengetahui apa saja yang bisa perempuan hadapi di kehidupan nyata.

Link Women akan menyediakan pelatihan daring gratis yang dapat diakses melalui markoding.org/linkwomen. Pelatihan ini mencakup modul tentang kesadaran gender (konsep dasar gender dan strategi untuk mengatasi bias di tempat kerja), keterampilan lunak (soft skills), kesiapan berkarier, pemasaran digital, serta pengenalan dan kesiapan terhadap kecerdasan buatan (AI). Dari program ini, 200 peserta terbaik akan mengikuti bootcamp daring intensif pada September 2025, dengan jalur pembelajaran digital yang dapat dipilih sesuai minat. Di akhir program, peserta terpilih juga berkesempatan mendapatkan pendampingan (mentorship) eksklusif dari para pemimpin industri untuk memperluas jaringan profesional dan terhubung dengan perusahaan.
