Migrant Women and International Migrants Day

On the occasion of International Migrants Day, UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific reaffirms its commitment to work with partners to ensure that migration remains a matter of choice, with respect for rights, and guaranteed safe passage for all migrants, especially women and girls, seeking a better future.
There are more than 230 million migrants in the world, with over 59 million in Asia Pacific. Nearly half of them are women. Yet women migrants are vulnerable to restrictions from lack of access to decent work and gender wage gaps to blatant labour rights abuses.
In Asia and the Pacific Region, UN Women Regional Programme for Migration implements projects that focus on 1) generation of evidence and new knowledge to inform policy advocacy in the direction of protecting and promoting interests and rights of women migrant workers, 2) advocacy with National and regional mechanisms to ensure that processes of recruitment and migration governance are gender responsive 3) social mobilization and campaigning to influence norms and attitudes towards women migrant workers 4) increasing awareness on legal and regulatory policy frameworks on the role of recruitment/ employment agencies and relevant government functionaries to facilitate the implementation of gender responsive standard terms of employment for women migrant domestic workers.

Worker, Helper, Auntie, Maid? the publication
Working conditions and attitudes experienced by migrant domestic workers in Thailand and Malaysia.
“Worker, Helper, Auntie and Maid?” attempts to create a clearer picture of the underlying factors influencing the lived employment experiences of migrant domestic workers in Thailand and Malaysia. The publication focuses on the links between the working conditions as described by migrant domestic workers, and attitudes to migrant and domestic workers as expressed in the media and by employers.
