As a consequence of the global COVID-19 pandemic, millions of people now find themselves indoors. Gender inequalities, particularly of women in the home, are becoming increasingly apparent when it comes to housework, cleaning and caring for children, the sick or the elderly. With billions of people trapped at home, reports of domestic violence are rising. In responding to the outbreak, women make up 70 per cent of workers in the health and social sector and do three times as much unpaid care work at home as men.

In response to the increased burden of care work and increased reports of domestic violence during COVID-19, UN Women has launched #HeForSheAtHome campaign. We are encouraging men to create respectful relationships at home and do their equal part when it comes to housework. This is a call to invite men and boys -  husbands, partners, brothers, sons, roommates, to join our challenge and inspire more men to do their equal part.  Help us create a new normal and shift gender norms by raising awareness, sharing your photos/videos and inspiring others to follow your lead.

For some women, staying at home during lockdown does not mean only mean more chores, but also unfortunately being locked up with an abusive partner.

As men, you can help. Check in with people you know. Be an active bystander. Call out and confront inappropriate behavior. Create a respectful environment at home.
