Strengthening women’s response to climate change: empowering grassroots women to cope with natural disastersUN Women is supporting the Viet Nam Women’s Union to strengthen the role of women at the commune level in the decision making process on climate change and natural disaster reduction and management actions in Phu Yen and Binh Dinh provinces. Activities in the programme includes training for local men and women and female leaders at community level on disaster risk reduction (DRR) and disaster risk management (DRM) focusing on floods and typhoon preparedness.

Many thousands of people have been able to access the information through trainings and information presented in radio soap operas that are broadcasted in local areas. Women have gained a stronger voice in decision making through their participation in the main forums and policy dialogues related to DRR and DRM at the provincial and district level. There has been an increase of female representation on the Flood and Strom Control committees at a commune level. As the project up scales, it is hoped this representation will increase at the district and provincial level.
