Event description

Objectives of the Training:

The overall objective of the training is to contribute towards strengthening the role of civil society, particularly women’s rights organizations and lawyers; and government organisations responsible for CEDAW implementation in Thailand. Specifically the training will have the following purposes:

  1. To build the capacity of CSOs and GOs on understanding CEDAW, its principles and using CEDAW to map discrimination and gender inequalities;
  2. To provide the tools for the participants to analyze domestic violence law and gender equality bill to assess whether they are CEDAW Compliant leading to drafting recommendations to law drafters and law makers;
  3. To  provide a platform for CSOs and GOs to dialogue for the improvement of the existing law/bill and further discuss for further cooperation towards law reform;
  4. To form a CSO advocacy group to identify advocacy strategies for laws reform.
  5. To build up a pool of CEDAW experts at the national level.

Expected Results

The following are the expected results of the workshop:

  1. The participants are well familiar with the CEDAW Convention and its principles;
  2. Increased analytical knowledge and skills of participants on the specific elements for drafting recommendations to Gender Equality Bill and Domestic Violence Act  that are CEDAW Compliant;
  3. A core group of advocacy for laws reform formed;
  4. CSOs are able to assist the State to become more effective in carrying out the State Obligation on CEDAW implementation. 

Participants and Resource Persons

The training will bring altogether 25 selected representatives of women’s organizations, government agencies,  national women’s machinery and lawyers involved in domestic violence law and gender equality bill. The resource persons of the training will be from IWRAW AP, a Regional NGOs well recognized by the CEDAW Committee Members.
