UN Women establishes Civil Society Advisory Group in India

Date:

New Delhi - UN Women has announced the establishment of a 15-member Civil Society Advisory Group for UN Women in India, comprising of celebrated women’s rights advocates and gender experts. Selected by an independent Committee, this group will fill a particularly important gap by allowing members to engage the organisation in regular dialogue on its programmes and priorities. The selected persons will be members of the UN Women Civil Society Advisory Group for India for the period 2012-2014.

This group brings together some of the stalwarts of the women’s rights movement in India and champions of women’s emancipation. The nominations received for the Advisory Group came from all over the country, and included members of small civil society organizations from under-represented, under-served areas. The criteria and the process used to select members were shared with civil society.

In order to implement the national commitments on gender and foster gender equality, UN Women continues to partner with women’s organisations all over the country, and actively engages government ministries and departments.

In India, the Civil Society Advisory Group will give this vision a renewed vigour by its ability to begin a deeper, broader consultative engagement. It will also serve as a mechanism to better facilitate the achievement of women’s human rights and gender equality in India.
