Empowering Rohingya women - UN Women update

On 25 August 2017, the violence in Rakhine State, Myanmar, targeting the Rohingya escalated and forced them to flee across the border to Bangladesh. To date an estimated 687,000 Rohingya have crossed over into Cox’s Bazar in desperate conditions, an estimated 52 per cent of whom are women and girls. The speed and scale of the influx of refugees has resulted in a critical humanitarian emergency. In order to help efforts led by the Government of Bangladesh to respond to this unprecedented level of influx, UN Women is promoting gender equality and women’s participation and empowerment in the cross-sectoral humanitarian response to bring targeted assistance to Rohingya women and girls. UN Women focuses on the most vulnerable and marginalized, in particular female headed households, and adolescent girls. This update provides a summary of support provided by UN Women up to 30 April 2018.
