Violence Against Women

UN Women Pakistan works on several fronts to prevent the vicious cycle of violence against women. UN Women multiplies the power of its groundbreaking strategies through advocacy campaigns and close partnerships with all tiers of the government, women’s groups and other branches of the UN system. UN Women has taken a lead in conceptualizing, establishing and facilitating an alliance on Eliminating Violence Against Women known as the EVAW Alliance Group. This group consists of governmental and non-governmental actors, as well as bilateral actors. The alliance aims to coordinate and strengthen interventions in order to have productive and effective results in combating the menace of violence against women in Pakistan.

UN Women strongly supports and provides technical assistance in: advocating for protective laws and national actions and their effective implementation such as the latest draft Domestic Violence Bill. Additionally four pro women legislative bills have been passed in Pakistan such as the acid crime and prevention bill, sexual harassment at the work place etc. Moreover, UN Women also supports the Ministry of Interior in amending the Human Trafficking Ordinance 2002 and particularly to the Concluding Observations of CEDAW.

Emphasis is upon communicable diseases such as Hepatitis, HIV and AIDS on reducing the growing vulnerability of women and girls towards these diseases. UN Women Pakistan has developed an action plan for supporting the National Aids Control Authority by providing technical support on gender equality and will also strengthen the voice and visibility of positive women’s networks through capacity building and will work around safe migration and vulnerabilities of women to HIV and trafficking. UN Women in support with the Ministry of Human Rights will also develop programmes around Hepatitis B&C and HIV.
