The second Gender-Impact Flash Update provides an overview of the gender-specific impacts of the earthquake that struck Myanmar on 28 March 2025. Developed by the Gender in Humanitarian Action Working Group (GiHA WG), it reflects initial needs assessments and observations from GiHA WG members, including local women-led organisations.

Key insights include:

  • Over 17 million people have been affected, including 8.8 million women and girls. An estimated 4.8 million women and girls were living in the worst-affected areas.
  • Health services are severely disrupted, putting over 220,000 pregnancies at risk due to damaged facilities, shortages of supplies, and limited access to reproductive health services.
  • Women and girls are at heightened risk of gender-based violence, trafficking, and exploitation—exacerbated by displacement, lack of safe shelter, and lack of access to protection services.
