This GE Update focuses on Cash transfer programming - the facilitation of cash to vulnerable people - that is increasingly used as a critical approach in humanitarian action offering targeted opportunities for women. This type of programming allows the receivers the voice and power to determine their own needs, and the agency to plan their own humanitarian response, while also supporting local economies and businesses.

The report aims to strengthen country-driven processes by presenting more evidence of the links between gender equality and climate change in the priority sectors of forestry, agriculture, energy, and water. It was prepared by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and UN Women to provide country-specific recommendations on enhancing gender responsive policy implementation and actions to further augment the integration of gender equality in climate relevant policy areas.

The UN Women Asia-Pacific WEPs Awards is the first regional awards initiative that recognizes companies who are taking action for gender equality in the region aligned to the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), with the ultimate objective to make good practices visible and encourage more business to take action by joining the WEPs.

Gender Equality Update 33 highlights some of the innovative solutions Nepal’s youth have designed and executed during the COVID-19 crisis, such as creating informative podcasts, distributing medical equipment, running awareness campaigns and taking part in government-funded start-ups. It also captures information on the Generation Equality Forum and campaign, that brought together the next generation of women’s rights activists with veteran gender equality advocates and visionaries.

The Gender Equality in Numbers report consolidates available data on key gender-related Sustainable Development Goal indicators and the minimum set of gender-related indicators for Nepal. It provides an overview of commitments to gender equality and women’s empowerment and key statistics in population demographics, health, education, leadership, labour and economic empowerment, poverty reduction and ending all forms of gender based violence.

The Government of Nepal has demonstrated through progressive policy measures a strong commitment to advance Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) issues and has centre staged GESI principles in public policies and budget processes. Gender Responsive Budgeting (GRB) was endorsed as an important strategy to promote GESI principles in national plans and budgets. On 29 May 2021 the Government of Nepal presented NPR 1.647 trillion budget for the Fiscal Year 2078/2079 (2021/2022).

The study report of National Women Commission, Nepal, monitors the progress on the implementation of the 2018, Concluding Observations issued by the CEDAW Committee on the sixth periodic report of Nepal. The progress was systematically monitored on the basis of a novel and practical tool.

As the current outbreak of COVID-19 continues to impact the most vulnerable communities, the need for effective cooperation and response has increased. The Gender Equality Update 32 is the result of the Gender in Humanitarian Action Task Team (GiHA-TT) meeting, in which Civil Society Organizations, International Development Partners, UN agencies and the Government of Nepal came together to highlight the needs, challenges, good practices and lessons learned in responding to the current wave.

As Nepal grapples with a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the lives of people in Nepal have been drastically impacted. The most severe consequences are being borne by women, as well as vulnerable and excluded groups. To respond to the ongoing humanitarian crisis, UN Women Nepal Country Office (NCO) has developed a comprehensive relief package to support women from excluded groups in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has further magnified the challenges faced by vulnerable groups in Nepal. The Gender in Humanitarian Action Task Team (GiHA-TT), a multi-stakeholder network of Civil Society Organizations, International Development Partners, UN agencies and Government of Nepal, chaired by UN Women Nepal has been actively advancing the incorporation of gender equality and social inclusion into Nepal’s responses to the pandemic.

Each monsoon season, Nepal becomes particularly vulnerable to floods and landslides caused by heavy rain. This year, experts are predicting that Nepal will receive even more rainfall than normal between June and September. The current wave of COVID-19 has already severely impacted vulnerable populations – and now a heavy monsoon season is likely to further exacerbate their condition. This GE Update focuses on the lessons learned from past years and key recommendations to prepare for monsoon season in light of COVID-19.

The policy brief, Nepal’s Gender-Based Violence and Gender Equality Funds: The Path to Effective Implementation, provides targeted recommendations to the Government of Nepal (GoN), civil society, and other key actors for the effective implementation of Nepal’s gender-based violence (GBV) and gender equality (GE) funds in a federal context.

An equal and inclusive society demands inclusion of voices from all paths. The checklist, ‘Diversity in Dialogue’ includes detailed steps to help organizers and panelists to ensure multiple arguments, expertise and inclusion in public forums. UN Nepal’s Gender Theme Group collaborated with International Development Partners – Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Group to develop the checklist. UN in Nepal and more than 17 International Development Partners have signed the pledge. Let’s make a conscious choice today to promote inclusive representation.
