UN Women has secured funding in the amount of CAD 8.5 million from Canada for a five-year regional programme, “Empowering women for sustainable peace: preventing violence and promoting social cohesion in ASEAN” (Advancing WPS in ASEAN) covering the period from 2021-2025.

Online Launch of the ASEAN Gender Outlook: Achieving the SDGs for all and leaving no woman and girl behind

Draft concept note

The ASEAN Gender Outlook is the first regional ASEAN flagship publication based on multiple deprivation analysis jointly produced by the ASEAN Committee on Women (ACW), the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC) and UN Women. It is a milestone document that looks at the notable gains on SDGs in ASEAN countries, as well as gaps and challenges, especially against the backdrop of COVID 19 pandemic, using an engender lens towards achieving sustainable development and the promise of 'leaving no one behind' as aspired in the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The launch event will bring together government officials, policymakers, practitioners, development partners, UN agencies and relevant stakeholders from across the region.

Draft concept note

The Asia-Pacific Regional Commemoration of IWD 2021 will focus on highlighting the ways in which women leaders were able to bring to bear their different experiences, perspectives, and skills to the table, and make irreplaceable contributions to decisions, policies and laws, to ensure that they work better for all. The aim will be to provide a virtual platform for women leaders from government, the UN system, the women’s and youth movements to share their experiences and lessons learnt in the context of COVID-19, and to discuss ways in which such efforts can be built upon.

Concept note is to be finalized and discussed with partners.

International Women’s Day: Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world 

The event will be a 1.5-hour online event, intended for an interested general-public audience who will hear the latest research on women’s leadership in COVID-19 response, as well as inspiring stories from women leaders across the Asia Pacific region.

Concept note

Social media support: UNDRR will onboard a communications officer (Patrick) in early February to work on a campaign leading up to the event, which will highlight profiles of inspirational women in leadership roles in COVID-19 responses and recovery efforts. These stories will be posted on their social media platforms to draw attention to the event and enhance visibility. If you know of any women leaders who should be spotlighted, please kindly let us know. It would be great for us to collaborate with UNDRR in showcasing these women’s work. In addition, Patrick will share the social media card with us to disseminate it to those on our mailing list as soon as he joins the team.

EmPower project: Side event on gender and climate change adaptation (on the Opening day of the AP adaptation network forum "Enabling Resilience for All: The Critical Decade to Scale-up Action")

The side event will be organised as a TED talk or Smart-talk event, where a mix of verbal and non-verbal communications will be mixed to create a deep-dive atmosphere. The discuss will focus the role of women in climate change adaptation.

EmPower project: IWD event with UNEP on gender and climate adaptation

Launch of the ASEAN WPS Study

The study has been highly anticipated in all the ASEAN high level meetings last year, including at the ASEAN Summit and ASEAN Ministry. The report is positioned as ‘ASEAN’ report with the support of USAID PROSPECT and UN Women. The draft has been through extensive reviewed at the regional and country level. Currently the final draft ASEAN WPS study is going through final review for endorsement by ACW/ACWC and ad-ref endorsement by the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Women by end of Feb 2021.

Mask-based movement will launch the facemask campaign which aims to challenge norms about the role, place and future of women in Afghanistan. UN Women Afghanistan launched a call for ideas encouraging Afghan women artists or women with artistic abilities -be it activists, community leaders, journalists, frontline human/civil rights defenders, to submit their proposed artwork to appear on face mask. A mix of Afghan women artists, UN Women-  Afghanistan and donors selected the top 5 designs for the campaign, based on a pre-defined criteria. Exact date and time to be confirmed.
