The Women Ambassadors Group and women leaders of the United Nations are holding the 5th edition of the ‘Ambassador for a Day’ competition from December 2024 until its culmination on International Women’s Day 2025.

As part of this initiative, young people between the ages of 16 to 25, with a specific outreach to the LGBTIQ+ community, young persons with disabilities and other youth groups, are competing from across the country submitting a 90-second video on the theme of ‘Innovation for Tomorrow: Youth Voices for a Gender-Equal Future’. This year’s topic is in line with the priorities of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, as reaffirmed by the Pact for the Future. The selected winners will “shadow” an Ambassador or UN leader for a day on the International Women’s Day. This includes attending an evening reception hosted by the Ambassador of the Philippines; attending the ESCAP-UN Women Asia-Pacific Regional Commemoration of International Women’s Day (IWD) at ESCAP and participating in the programme organized by the hosting/participating organizations. For more details about the Ambassador for a Day segment, visit the IWD event page.

The Ambassador for a Day initiative, launched in 2021 by the Embassies of Canada and India, has been successfully co-hosted by various countries together with the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in Thailand over the past three years. In 2022, the initiative was co-hosted by the Ambassadors of Belgium, followed by Australia in 2023 and the Philippines in 2024. For the fifth edition, the Ambassador of Peru and the UN Resident Coordinator are co-convening the initiative. The winners will be selected by the 2025 Ambassador for a Day Working Group composed of representatives from participating embassies and UN entities in Thailand.

A growing alumni community of more than one hundred past winners continues to engage through the hashtag #AmbassadorForADayTH and a Line-app-based alumni network. The alumni network includes youth leaders who represented Thailand at the UNGA79 and COP27, as well as are pursuing studies at Ivy League universities. Many alumni continue a relationship with the leaders they shadowed, interning or kickstarting their career at diplomatic missions and UN agencies.
