Gender Alert on COVID-19 in Afghanistan | Issue XIV: The Impact of COVID-19 on Women and Girls in Prisons and Detention Settings

UN Women and UNFPA, with contributions from the UNAMA, the International Legal Foundation (ILF) and Human Rights Watch (HRW), issue this 14th alert to continue to highlight the gender specific impacts of COVID-19 in Afghanistan. This alert focuses on the impact of COVID-19 on women and girls in prisons and detention settings, including girls in juvenile rehabilitation centers (JRCs). Specifically, the alertengages stakeholders on how to collectively ensure that the rights of women and girls in prisons and detention settings are protected, including through the provision of essential services, in line with the laws of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. It highlights the ways in which women and girls in prisons and detention settings have and will continue to have a distinct experience of COVID-19 andare at increased risk of infection and rights violations.
