Orange the World: End Violence against Women

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence is an international campaign (the 16 Days of Activism) which takes place each year and runs from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day. The campaign was originated from the first Women's Global Leadership Institute in 1991 and is coordinated each year by the Center for Women's Global Leadership. The campaign is used as an organizing strategy by individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.

In support of this civil society initiative, each year, the United Nations Secretary-General’s campaign UNiTE to End Violence against Women (UNiTE) calls for global action to increase worldwide awareness and create opportunities for discussion about challenges and solutions of ending violence against women. UNiTE is an UN interagency campaign, with UN Women as the coordinating agency. In 2010, UNiTE Campaign launched the regional campaign in the Asia-Pacific region.  In recent years, the UNiTE campaign has utilized the colour orange as a unifying theme running through all of its global activities. Orange is one of the official colours of the UNiTE campaign, as conceptualised by the Asia-Pacific UNiTE Youth Network. In the context of its global advocacy, the orange colour used as a symbol of a brighter future without violence against women and girls.

UN Women the Embassy of Canada in Thailand invite you to capture the spirit of the Secretary General’s UNiTE to End Violence against Women Campaign by making your own music video for the UNiTE Campaign Song 2016. You are welcome to use the song as is or to sing a cover version of the song in English or in your own language. The video clip should feature your campaign message to end violence against women and girls, and whenever possible, any campaign activities that you and your community have engaged in.

THEME

The general theme is UNiTE: End Violence against Women. Under the general campaign theme, the video clip may also include the following messages:

  • Ending violence against women and girls
  • Gender equality
  • Ending violence against women and girls is everyone’s responsibility
  • Respectful relationships between genders
  • Healthy masculinity
  • Campaign colour which is orange

Participants are encouraged to feature campaign and advocacy activities in their video clips and to portray a sense of hope and optimism.

HOW TO ENTER

  1. Make a music video clip featuring the UNiTE campaign song. You may use the version of the song provided, sing a cover version of the song or write your own song.
  2. Upload the clip onto Youtube and accompany it with a description of the theme chosen, shooting location with the hashtag #UNiTEsong, #16Days
  3. Email the Youtube link to [ Click to reveal ] with your name, contact details and your country to automatically enter the contest.
  4. Share your Youtube clip widely with friends and networks. The more views you get, the more likely you will win the prizes!

TIMELINE

The contest is open today until 28 February 2017. Entries received after the deadline will not be considered. Winners will be announced in Bangkok on 8 March 2017, International Women’s Day. * deadline has been extended *

SELECTION CRITERIA

[1] Judge’s Award

After the deadline, a panel of judges from UN Women Regional Office and Embassy of Canada in Thailand will select the two entries based on the following criteria:

  1. Relevance to the theme of UNiTE Campaign and 16 Days of Activism
  2. Potential impact
  3. Originality
  4. Artistic value
  5. Entertainment

The decision of the organizers and judges on all matters relating to the contest will be final. The Judges will choose a winner and an honorable mention who will be notified by email using the contact details provided with their entries.

Prize: Apple iPad mini 4 WiFi 32 GB donated by the Embassy of Canada in Thailand plus a UNiTE prize pack given by UN Women

The top two entries that receive the most number of views on the 15 of February 2016 will receive the Most Popular Prize.

PRIZES

The Judges Award winner and the Most Popular Award winner will each receive an Apple iPad mini 4 WiFi 32 GB valued at 550 Canadian Dollars to be donated by the Canadian Embassy in Thailand plus a UNiTE prize pack to be given by UN Women. The UNiTE prize pack consists of UNiTE shirts, hats, wristbands, notebooks, pens and other advocacy products. The interviews with the winners will be featured on the UN Women Asia-Pacific website with links to your organization/initiative/music that you would like to promote. The music video clips will be linked to the UN Women and UNiTE social media platforms. Winners and other selected entries will be featured on UN Women Asia-Pacific YouTube channel and website. They will also be screened on the public screens at the United National Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific and in public spaces around the Asia and the Pacific.

ELIGIBILITY AND RULES

  1. UN Women will determine eligibility at its sole discretion. Entrants can only submit to the contest original works for which they are the sole creator and own the copyright. If the piece of work contains images of a person or persons other than those of the entrant, entrant must have obtained the permission of those persons for submission of their images to the contest. Submitted videos must be original work. Entrants represent and warrant that their submission is their original work, has not been copied from others, and does not violate the rights of any other person or entity.
  2. The competition is open globally. By entering a video submission to the contest, the entrants accept the full terms and conditions of the contest. There is no entry fee of any kind.
  3. Entrants agree to grant UN Women a royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, fully paid-up, worldwide, non-exclusive, transferable license to use the videos entered into the contest. Entry into this contest constitutes entrant’s irrevocable, perpetual permission and consent to UN Women and sponsors   to use the videos in not-for-profit advocacy and promotional materials such as social media, multimedia packages, television, billboards, and printed materials etc., online and offline. The entry will also be added to UN entities online video galleries, Facebook pages, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, and made available to any party UN Women deems suitable, subject to appropriate crediting.
  4. The organizers reserve the right to remove and disqualify submitted entries which may cause offence or may be unsuitable or inappropriate for this contest.
  5. No responsibility can be taken by the organizers for entries that are incorrectly or incompletely submitted. Incomplete entries that do not comply with the theme, eligibility and rules will be automatically disqualified.
  6. UN Women will not pay any fees for, nor pay any costs relating to, the entry of the videos into the competition or for their use as described above. When the entry is used, credit will also be given to the entrant, but no monetary payments will be made.
  7. UN Women reserves the right to verify the eligibility of any entry and to disqualify any entrant who submits an entry that is not in accordance with these rules or who tampers with the entry process. By submitting entries to the contest, entrants agree that personal data, especially name and address, may be processed, shared, and otherwise used for the purposes and within the context of the contest and any other purposes outlined in these rules. The data may also be used by UN Women in order to verify the entrant's identity, postal address and telephone number or to otherwise verify the entrant's eligibility to participate in the contest.
  8. UN Women is not responsible for any entries not received due to internet or software failures.
  9. Nothing in the rules for this contest, nor any acts performed or statements made in relation to this contest, shall be deemed a waiver, express or implied, of any of the privileges and immunities of UN Women.
  10. UN Women and its officials and agents shall not be liable for any claims, demands, losses and liability of any kind or nature arising out of or in connection with any entrant’s participation in this contest or acceptance or use of the prizes awarded. By entering into the contest entrants agree to indemnify, defend, and hold and save harmless, UN Women, and its officials, agents, employees, consultants, sub-contractors and other representatives from and against all suits, proceedings, claims, demands, losses and liability of any kind or nature brought by any third party against UN Women, including, but not limited to, all litigation costs and expenses, attorney’s fees, settlement payments and damages, based on, arising from, or relating to UN Women’s use of the video(s). The obligations under this section do not lapse upon closure of the contest.
  11. UN Women reserves the right to cancel, modify, suspend or delay the contest in the event of unforeseen circumstances beyond its reasonable control. UN Women reserves the right to change, amend, delete or add to the eligibility requirements and rules at any time.
