UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific recently launched the UNiTE 2016 Song Contest to capture the spirit of the Secretary General’s UNiTE to End violence against women Campaign by inviting people’s own music video for the UNiTE Campaign Song 2016. As a starting point, Ms Abigail Pamei, an independent singer from India and Director Social Responsibility of International Federation of Muaythai Amateur (IFMA), courteously create a song for the UNiTE campaign. UN Women Asia-Pacific sat down with Abigail to find out her inspiration for the UNiTE Campaign song.

What has been your inspiration for the song? What was the song writing process?

I have been involved for a few years now in the UNiTE to End Violence Against Women Campaign via IFMA in my role as the Director Social Responsibility, where IFMA is a proud and active partner with UN Women. When I was approached by UN Women to write a song for the campaign, the song came naturally, my closeness to the campaign and the themes made the process quick and seamless.

What would you like the listeners to take away after listening to the song?

I wanted to create an upbeat anthem to celebrate joining hands for the cause, to unite to provide the basic human right of safety for women and that unhindered, we can all live up to our full potential. The song stresses that there is strength in unity and this unity can bring a hope and a solution to the problems that affects all of us as a global community. The dance beat brings in an uplifting spirit for us to rise and take a stand. I hope people get more inspired by the song and join the UNiTE campaign to end violence against women. Thanks to Kenneth for his talent and vision for the song!

UNITE (KAIZVN x KAS)

Look at you and me
Girls and Boys we were born to be free
We have all the rights
Do what what we chose, be what we want to be

‘Cause look at what’s going on
Pushed and shoved, where is the love

Let’s UNITE! HEY!
Join our hands to end violence against women
UNITE! HEY!
Take a stand to end violence against women

Fight for equality
We can’t stand by silently
We must use our voice, make a noise
Rise unitedly

‘Cause look at what’s going on
Pushed and shoved, where is the love

Let’s UNITE! HEY!
Join our hands to end violence against women
UNITE! HEY!
Take a stand to end violence against women

We were born to be free,
To be ourselves, you and me
We must take a stand
and defend where we can

Let’s UNITE! HEY!
Join our hands to end violence against women
UNITE! HEY!
Take a stand to end violence against women

It’s about you you you,
It’s about me me me,
Together we’re free, free, free
Let’s UNITE!
