Statement by UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka following the devastating earthquake in Nepal
Date:
UN Women stands in strong solidarity with the people of Nepal as they face the loss of life of loved ones and the physical devastation caused by the earthquake and aftershocks. The priority at this time is to conduct search and rescue operations, including in rural and remote areas. Homes and buildings have collapsed and entire areas have been flattened. The people of Nepal need food, water, emergency shelter and healthcare. We need to work together urgently to re-establish secure conditions.
UN Women is committed to supporting the relief efforts together with the people of Nepal, recognizing the vital role women play in shaping priorities for relief and reconstruction. As the loss of homes and shelter often leaves women particularly vulnerable to violence after humanitarian disasters, our focus will also be on providing protection for women and girls in camps and elsewhere. UN Women will also work with local women’s groups to provide urgently needed services and support the overall humanitarian needs assessment to ensure that the needs of women, men, boys and girls, especially those most disadvantaged, are equitably taken into account.
Now is the time for the international community to come together to work with the Government and people of Nepal to meet emergency and recovery needs.
