Pakistan’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination partnered with UN Women Pakistan and our Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific to present a side event at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The event took a deep-dive into gender, climate change and human vulnerabilities. Bringing together Pakistani women leaders and women from other regions who navigate the terrain of climate crises and risks, you are invited to view the recorded livestream (see above) and hear how the human security perspective and gender approach offer entry points for sustainable climate finance.

Context

The nexus between gender, climate change, and human security can be increasingly witnessed in Pakistan. The Government recognizes that climate crises are not felt equally and that women and men have distinct capabilities as agents of change toward effective adaptation.  The Government of Pakistan developed a national climate change gender action plan (ccGAP) in 2022 to ensure gender-responsive national actions across the six priority sectors, under the national climate change policy of Pakistan. Likewise, the Resilient Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction Framework of the Government of Pakistan (4RF) recognizes climate change as a significant threat multiplier that can undermine development gains if not adequately addressed.

With climate vulnerabilities running along gendered and intersectional lines, the case for gender-responsiveness and meaningful engagement of women in climate adaptation responses has never been more compelling. While the policies have suggested critical multi-partner actions to respond to the needs around human security in the context of climate change, the challenge remains to attract sustainable funding and translate the policies into action.
