A strategy for empowering women economically in India

New Delhi - UN Women India hosted a round table meeting to outline programmatic priorities and strategic partnerships to empower women in India. Ms. Lise Grande, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative drew attention to the power of women as catalysts for transformative change across the social, political, economic and cultural spheres. She was speaking in the presence of representatives from the government, civil society organizations, research institutions, policy makers and the corporate sector.

The meeting provided an opportunity for these participants to review and share insights into the challenges and barriers that limit women’s economic empowerment opportunities. Key themes focused on the increasing the number of women in the informal sector, challenges of unpaid work, feminization of poverty and agriculture, and limited access to land and resource assets. The experts also discussed the need to strengthen membership-based organizations, and increase awareness about existing legislations and data.

The experts suggested that UN Women could play a strategic role to support the Government of India’s national priorities and goals. It was suggested that such a role can be played by UN Women as a catalyst at various levels – from the grassroots to the policy level.
