Bangladesh is located in South Asia on the Bay of Bengal, and is bordered by India and Myanmar. It is one of the world’s most densely populated countries, with approximately 150 million inhabitants.1 89.7 percent of Bangladeshis are Muslim, Hindus constitute 9.2 percent, Buddhists 0.7 percent and Christians 0.3 percent. Bangladesh is a low-income country and ranks “low” on UNDP’s latest human development index. Gross national income was placed at 770 US dollars per capita in 2010, and approximately 40 percent of the population lives below the national poverty line.
