Introduction

In 2025, the global community will mark the thirtieth anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995)1, and 10 years of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development2 and its Sustainable Development Goals. On the occasion, the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women will, in March 20253, undertake a review and appraisal of progress made in implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and accelerate the realization of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. This anniversary is also the opportunity to strengthen gender-responsive action and implementation of the 2030 Agenda and other global commitments, such as those under Security Council resolution 1325 (2000) and subsequent resolutions on women and peace and security; the Addis Ababa Action Agenda of the Third International Conference on Financing for Development (2015); the Paris agreement on climate change (2015), and regional commitments to promote gender equality and women’s and girls’ rights, among others.

In line with ECOSOC Resolution E/RES/2022/54, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in collaboration with the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women) will convene the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on the Beijing+30 Review in November 2024. The regional review will take place at a critical time for the international community to take stock of progress made and actions required to address barriers to gender equality and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Accordingly, all States are called upon to undertake comprehensive national-level reviews of the progress made and challenges encountered in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and of the outcomes of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly held in 2000.

Objectives and outcome

Recognizing the need to empower member States within the ESCAP region to better engage in the Beijing+30 review process, this workshop will be jointly convened by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women), and aims to enhance the capacities of National Focal Point for the Beijing+30 preparatory process to complete the review and questionnaire. Through a virtual format, the workshop will provide comprehensive training on the reporting process, enabling ESCAP member States to learn more about the national-review and questionnaire and offer the opportunity for countries to ask questions.

Participants

The virtual workshop will bring together National Focal Points for the Beijing+30 preparatory process from ESCAP member States.

Modality/Structure of event
