Background

Current quantitative monitoring shows that the situation varies widely across the ASEAN member states (AMS) in terms of women’s political representation. In light of growing regionalism with ASEAN moving towards establishing one vision, one identify and one community existing diversity among the regional partners further underlines the need to have a regional-level system to systematically monitor and promote women’s participation in politics and public decision making. During the regional workshop, the findings from the country studies will be presented and discussed in detail. The discussions and the emerging recommendations and agreements are in turn expected to provide sufficient input to eventually achieve the second and the third objectives.

Objectives

The key specific purpose is for the ACW representatives from the ten country studies and the proposed regional monitoring framework for ASEAN, and to agree on the roadmap ahead for recommendations to the ASEAN governments and stakeholders on women's political participation; to  increase and deepen the understanding of key stakeholders on women’s political participation and voice in the ASEAN region.

The three specific objectives includes -

  1. generate baseline data and information for women’s political participation at national and sub-national levels in the ASEAN
  2. provide recommendations to the ASEAN governments and stakeholders on women’s political participation
  3. propose a system for monitoring progress in ASEAN on women’s political participation and voice in ASEAN

Expected Outcomes

A final expected output from the regional workshop is an agreed road map ahead with a proposed joint ASEAN statement, joint actions and activities, in support of the provision of recommendations to the ASEAN governments and stakeholders on women’s political participation.
